The VIN read as positions, the first three highlighted

Tesla VIN decoder: factory, build week, and hardware flags for UAE buyers, free

Reviewed June 2026. The decoder will run in your browser, nothing you paste is stored.

Paste a Tesla VIN and get the factory, the model year, the trim family, the build cohort, and the hardware flags that decide what the car is worth in the UAE. I built this because the listing tells you the year and the color, and the VIN tells you the truth.

Every used Tesla I have inspected got decoded before I drove anywhere. Three characters tell you which factory built it. One letter tells you the real model year. The sequence number, read against the production timeline, tells you which side of the four value cliffs the car sits on. That is most of a buying decision before you leave the sofa, and right now there are 160 · listed now · as of Jul 22, 2026 used Model Ys in the UAE to run through it.

The interactive decoder is being wired up. Until it goes live, the table below decodes any Tesla VIN by hand in about a minute, and the build-week flags are in our used Model Y guide.

Six positions carry everything a buyer needs

A Tesla VIN is 17 characters. You only need to read six positions, and none of them require a database.

Position What it encodes The values that matter
1–3 Factory (WMI) LRW Shanghai · XP7 Berlin · 5YJ Fremont · 7SA Austin. In the UAE you will mostly see LRW and XP7, and that is good news, they are the two strongest plants.
4 Model line Y is Model Y, 3 is Model 3, S and X are themselves. Clean signal on a Tesla.
7–8 Motor and drive config EK reads dual-motor Long Range, EL reads dual-motor Performance, EH and EJ family codes read single-motor RWD. Tesla shuffled codes occasionally, so treat this as strong evidence and confirm on the door-jamb sticker.
10 Model year letter N 2022 · P 2023 · R 2024 · S 2025 · T 2026. Tesla skips I, O, Q, U, Z per the SAE convention.
11 Plant code (sanity check) C Shanghai · B Berlin · F Fremont · A Austin. Must agree with positions 1 to 3, a mismatch means a re-stamped or mistyped VIN, walk away.
12–17 Production sequence Lower is earlier within the model year. Read against the cliff dates, this is what places a car before or after the October 2022 revalve, the September 2023 megacasting, and the February 2024 HW4 switch.

A real decode, 40 seconds

Take LRWYGCEK2NC238204, a car we analyzed for this guide. LRW says Shanghai. Y says Model Y. EK says dual-motor Long Range. N says model year 2022. C confirms Shanghai. Sequence 238204 places it mid-2022, which lands it on the wrong side of two cliffs at once: the stiff early suspension tune and the ultrasonic-sensor era. That second part is actually the pleasant surprise, USS cars park better than the early camera-only builds that followed. So the verdict reads: a comfort-compromised car with great parking, and it should be priced well under the 2022 median, currently AED 123,650 · median asking · as of Jul 21, 2026 for a GCC Long Range across all years. The same minute of reading works on any Tesla VIN you are sent on WhatsApp.

What the decoder flags, and what to do with each flag

  • Factory verdict. LRW and XP7 pass. 5YJ earns a harder inspection, Fremont is the most variable line of the four. 7SA gets a structural-pack warning, UAE body shops are thin on 4680 repair and insurers price that in. The full plant cards are in the buyer’s guide.
  • Suspension flag. 2022 Shanghai sequence below the October cut-over reads “early stiff tune, test on bad pavement before paying”.
  • Park Assist flag. Built before October 2022 reads “USS hardware, parks properly”. After, “camera-only, fine on current software”.
  • Front-casting flag. Shanghai before late September 2023 reads “multi-piece front, higher repair cost after a front hit, mention it to your insurer”.
  • Computer flag. Before February 2024 (Shanghai) or May 2024 (Berlin) reads HW3. After reads HW4, which is worth a real premium and holds it. The best-year guide turns these flags into a decision.
  • Recall check. The decoder links the VIN straight into Tesla’s official recall search, plus NHTSA for 5YJ and 7SA cars and the KBA portal for XP7. Physical-work recalls are the ones to verify in the service history, most Tesla recalls are software pushes the car already installed itself.

One thing the VIN never tells you: whether the car is GCC-spec. A Shanghai VIN looks identical whether Tesla UAE sold it or someone shipped it in from China last month. That answer lives in the paperwork, and the GCC vs import check is the five-minute routine that settles it.

The decode is half the verification. The VIN tells you what the car was built as, factory, year, hardware cohort; what it is now, battery health, fault history, crash and flood symptoms, you read on the car itself in fifteen minutes, and our Service Mode buyer’s guide shows every panel.

VIN decoder questions

Is it safe to paste a VIN into this tool?

Yes. The decode runs in your browser and we do not store what you paste. A VIN identifies a car, never a person, and we never display VINs from our own listings dataset either.

Can the VIN tell me if a Tesla has Hardware 4?

Indirectly and reliably. The build date implied by the model-year letter and sequence number places the car before or after the switch, 1 February 2024 for Shanghai, May 2024 for Berlin. For a car built within weeks of the cliff, confirm with the camera module shape behind the windshield.

Does the VIN show accidents or service history?

No. The VIN gives you build facts, the factory, year, config, and cohort. History lives in Tesla’s service records and the UAE paperwork. Use the VIN to know what the car was born as, then verify what happened to it since.

Can I decode a Model 3, S, X, or Cybertruck here?

The position logic is identical across Tesla models, factory, year letter, and sequence all read the same way. The cliff flags on this page are Model Y specific, since that is the car we have mapped week by week.
