Buy a Shanghai-built Long Range from the second half of 2023 if you want the most car per dirham, or the same car built after 1 February 2024 if you want the HW4 computer and the stronger resale that comes with it. That is the whole answer for most buyers. The rest of this page is the reasoning, the honest catch on each year, and the cases where a different cohort fits you better.
One reframe before the table: the model year is a proxy. Tesla changed the Model Y mid-year, every year, so two cars with the same registration can sit on opposite sides of a value cliff. The year gets you close, the build week decides. Our VIN decoder reads the build cohort in seconds, and the full cliff mechanics live in the buyer’s guide.
The year-by-year decision table
| Cohort | What you get | The catch | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022, built before October | The cheapest entry into a Model Y. USS hardware, so parking sensors actually exist. | The harsh early suspension tune, genuinely tiring on UAE roads, worse on 20-inch wheels. Multi-piece front end costs more to repair. | A hard-budget buyer on 19-inch wheels who test-drove it on bad pavement and still liked it, at a deep discount only. |
| 2022, built October onward | The revalved soft suspension, the same low price band as early 2022. | First-generation camera-only parking, fine on current software, clumsy history. 12V battery due about now in this climate. | The value hunter who decodes VINs and refuses to pay 2023 money for a 2022 registration. |
| 2023, first half | Refined HW3 platform, soft tune, strong Shanghai build quality. | Pre-megacasting front (until late September), so a front-end repair runs dearer. Insurers notice. | A buyer who found a clean low-km car priced under the late-2023 cohort. |
| 2023 Q3 to Jan 2024, the value pick | Every refinement of the pre-Juniper run except HW4: one-piece front casting, mature Vision parking, the best-sorted HW3 software. | It is still HW3. The autonomy roadmap is slower and resale will track that. | Most UAE buyers. The best car per dirham in the used Model Y market today. |
| Feb 2024 onward, the horizon pick | The same refined body with the HW4 computer: sharper cameras, better Sentry and dashcam, the longer software runway. | A premium of roughly 10 to 15% over the equivalent HW3 car, by our estimate, and that gap is the point, it should hold or widen. | Anyone keeping the car past 2028 or buying with resale as a first-class concern. |
| Early 2025, pre-Juniper | The last and most debugged pre-Juniper builds, HW4, thin supply. | Priced against the Juniper refresh next to it on the lot, so the discount for the old design is the entire argument. | A buyer offered one at a real gap below a comparable Juniper. Run the comparison in our Juniper guide first. |
Berlin-built cars (VIN starts XP7) follow the same logic one step later: their HW4 switch came in May 2024, their best cohort is May 2024 onward, and their 2022 cars need a paint and panel inspection before any money moves. One Berlin-specific trap: the RWD built from May 2023 carries the 55 kWh BYD pack, a real range downgrade, the Long Range is unaffected.
Why late 2023 is the value pick
The Q3 2023 to January 2024 Shanghai window is where every running change of the pre-Juniper era had already landed and the HW4 premium had not yet started. Soft suspension since late 2022. The one-piece front casting from late September 2023, which is cheaper to repair and slightly stiffer. Camera parking that had two years of software fixes behind it. And because the window sits a model year back from the newest cars, it prices like history while driving like the 2024s. The catch stays the catch: HW3. If you trade cars every two or three years, the HW3 discount you enjoyed on purchase will be the HW3 discount you grant on sale. Our depreciation analysis shows how that flows through resale, it is the companion read to this page.
Why February 2024 onward is the horizon pick
HW4 is the only cliff you cannot inspect away. Suspension, casting, parking, all of those are settled qualities you can test at the curb. The computer decides which software branch the car lives on for the rest of its life. Tesla has back-ported pieces of its driver assistance to HW3 in reduced form, and the direction of travel is plain. By our estimate the HW3-to-HW4 gap on equivalent cars runs 10 to 15% today and widens over the next two years, which makes the HW4 premium less a cost and more a deposit you get back at resale. If FSD ever ships in the UAE, and it is absent from the option list today, HW4 is the hardware it ships to first.
The 2022 case, honestly
A post-October 2022 Shanghai car on 19-inch wheels is a rational budget buy: revalved ride, USS-era parking is gone but the camera stack is fine now, and the price band sits at the bottom of the market. Two disciplines make it work. First, decode before viewing, the October line runs through the middle of the 2022 sequence range, and sellers price the year, never the week. Second, budget the age items: the 12V battery is due in this climate, and listen for the octovalve hum with the AC running, an out-of-warranty fix runs AED 5,000 to 8,000 and is the single best negotiating lever on a 2022 car. The early-2022 stiff-tune cars I would leave unless the discount is dramatic and the wheels are 19-inch. And at this end of the market the cheap car is often cheap for the other reason: check the spec region with the five-minute import check before the price turns your head.
Price the year against the live market
Asking prices spread wide inside every model year, the cliffs explain most of it. Best-year questions, answered straight
What is the best year for a used Tesla Model Y in the UAE?
Late 2023 for value, a Shanghai-built Long Range from Q3 2023 to January 2024 carries every pre-Juniper refinement except the HW4 computer. February 2024 onward is the pick if resale and the software horizon matter more than the purchase price.
Is a 2022 Model Y worth buying now?
A post-October 2022 build on 19-inch wheels at the bottom of the price band, yes, with the 12V battery and octovalve checks done. The early-2022 stiff-suspension cars are tiring on UAE roads and only make sense at a dramatic discount.
How much more is HW4 worth paying for?
By our estimate, 10 to 15% over an equivalent HW3 car, and the gap should hold or widen as the software branches diverge. On a car you keep past 2028, the premium behaves like a deposit you recover at resale.
Does the model year matter more than the build week?
The build week decides, the year approximates. Tesla’s changes landed mid-year, every year, so always decode the VIN before pricing a car, two same-year cars can sit on opposite sides of a value cliff.
