Tesla redesigned the Model Y in late 2024. The new car — internally codenamed Juniper — was unveiled in China on 10 January 2025, reached Chinese dealers in February, the United States in March, Europe in May, and the UAE configurator in the second half of 2025. The Performance trim followed in August 2025.
The cars sold in early 2025 are the last of the original design: 2024 production carries a model-year-2025 VIN, and 2025 Juniper production carries a model-year-2026 VIN. A buyer asking “is this Juniper?” cannot trust the model year alone — they need to look at the VIN or the car itself.
This guide is for that buyer. It covers what changed, what stayed, how to tell the two apart, and what the live UAE market is asking for each.
What changed
Tesla changed seven things on the Model Y for Juniper and left the rest alone.
| What | Original design (2020–2024) | Juniper (2025+) |
|---|---|---|
| Front fascia | Pinched headlights, conventional grille | Full-width 3-piece LED light bar; projectors moved low |
| Rear lighting | Tail lamps in the bumper | Hidden LED strip projected onto a silver applique |
| Interior | Single 15″ front screen, gear-selector stalk | 15″ front + new 8″ rear-passenger screen; stalk removed |
| Wheels (standard) | 19″ Gemini | 19″ Crossflow |
| Drag coefficient | ~0.23 | 0.22 |
| Suspension | Conventional dampers | Frequency-Selective Dampers (adaptive) |
| Cabin acoustics | Acoustic glass front only | Acoustic glass on all four windows |

Body and aerodynamics. The proportions are the same — Juniper is the same car underneath — but the panels are new from front to rear. The light bar on the nose is the most visible cue and can be switched off in the menu, which is worth knowing if you don’t want the car to advertise itself. The rear gets a thermoplastic spoiler and an extended diffuser. The new Glacier Blue paint is Juniper-only; Quicksilver and Midnight Cherry carry over.
Interior. The dashboard is redesigned, panel gaps are tighter, materials feel a step up. The 8″ rear screen handles climate, heated seats and streaming for back-seat passengers — the kind of thing buyers either love or ignore entirely. Ventilated front seats are standard on the higher trims. The wraparound ambient-light strip is new. The gear-selector stalk is gone; you swipe on the main screen or use a headliner button as backup. The turn-signal stalk is retained — the late change Tesla made after the Model 3 Highland refresh removed the turn-signal stalk and was loudly criticised for it.
Mechanical. The Frequency-Selective Damper is the largest functional change. It uses adaptive valving that softens high-frequency hits — small road imperfections, expansion joints, manhole covers — and stiffens for body control in corners. It is the change owners notice on the first drive. Tesla claims roughly 22% less cabin noise from the acoustic-glass upgrade and the new subframe bushings; the figure is Tesla-stated and not independently certified, but the difference is audible.
What carried over. Battery cells (the same NCMA pack on Long Range and Performance, LFP on RWD), the 250 kW peak DC charging on Long Range, the drive units, the HW4 Autopilot computer. The ~10% range gain on Juniper comes from aerodynamics, lower rolling resistance and software — not new cells.
What it means for UAE buyers
The Juniper Long Range was published at AED 209,990 in the Tesla UAE configurator at launch. The Performance trim, added in August 2025, lists from roughly AED 240,000. The Standard Range RWD has no official UAE MSRP — RWD Junipers on UAE forecourts are almost always parallel imports.
The cohort math, as of 19 May 2026. PlaidCars tracks 201 Tesla listings in the UAE today. Of those, 158 are Model Y. The cohort medians by year and trim are below — note that the figures are volatile, refreshed monthly. For live numbers, see the Model Y inventory.
| Cohort | Listings | Median ask (AED) |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 Long Range | 43 | 115,000 |
| 2023 Long Range | 27 | 128,000 |
| 2024 Long Range | 20 | 123,000 |
| 2025 Long Range (Juniper) | 11 | 183,000 |
| 2026 Long Range (Juniper) | 1 | 230,000 |
| 2022 Performance | 5 | 131,000 |
| 2023 Performance | 24 | 130,000 |
| 2024 Performance | 12 | 142,000 |
| 2022 Standard Range | 2 | 126,000 |
| 2023 Standard Range | 4 | 143,000 |
| 2024 Standard Range | 7 | 129,000 |
| 2026 Standard Range (Juniper) | 1 | 200,000 |
Two patterns are visible immediately. Juniper inventory carries a premium of roughly AED 50,000–80,000 over a year-younger Original-design Long Range — the price difference is significant. And inventory depth is mostly on the Original design: 145 Original-design Model Y vs 13 Juniper at the moment, because Juniper is still rolling out and most leases haven’t matured yet.
⚠️ Warranty matters. The Tesla UAE warranty covers the original 4 years / 80,000 km on the basic vehicle and 8 years / 120,000 km on the battery and drive unit, and it is honoured only in the region of original sale. A GCC-titled Juniper is fully covered. A US-spec or China-spec Juniper imported privately is not — Tesla UAE service centres will physically service the car but will decline warranty cost. That detail eats the resale value of import-spec Junipers by roughly 15–30%. Verify the specs region before paying. The full breakdown is in our GCC specs explainer.
Charging compatibility. GCC-spec Juniper uses CCS2, which matches the UAE Supercharger network and DEWA Green Chargers. US-spec and Chinese-spec cars use connectors that do not. Treat anything other than GCC as a project car.
FSD reality. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not enabled by Tesla for UAE-registered vehicles as of 2026. Both HW3 (Original design through mid-2023) and HW4 (Original design from mid-2023 onward and all Juniper) run Basic Autopilot in the UAE. HW3 cannot run unsupervised FSD regardless of region. A listing that claims “FSD” should be verified against the Tesla account entitlement before purchase.
How to identify Juniper vs Original Design
The visual cues are large enough that a buyer can tell at twenty paces with any of these in good light.
| What to check | Original design (2020–2024) | Juniper (2025+) |
|---|---|---|
| Front of the car | Two pinched headlights with a body-colour gap between | One full-width LED light bar across the nose |
| Rear of the car | Two vertical tail lamps in the bumper | Hidden LED strip projected onto a silver applique below the glass |
| Standard wheels | 19″ Gemini (clean two-spoke) or 20″ Induction | 19″ Crossflow or 20″ Helix 2.0 |
| Steering column | Standard wheel; gear-selector stalk on the right | Standard wheel; no gear-selector stalk — touchscreen swipe |
| Rear bench | No second screen | 8″ rear-passenger touchscreen between the front seats |
| Door windows | Acoustic glass front only | Acoustic glass all four windows (small triangular logo in the glass corner) |
The interior tells almost immediately on a five-second sit-in: feel along the right side of the steering column for a stalk. If it’s there, it’s an Original design. If it’s smooth, it’s a Juniper.
VIN check. If a seller is unsure, the model year encoded in the 10th VIN character is the secondary confirmation. Position 10 encodes the model year — P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026. A 2025 VIN (S) on a 2025 calendar build is the last of the Original design. A 2026 VIN (T) is Juniper. Our Tesla VIN decoder handles the lookup for you.
Should you wait or buy older
The honest answer depends on three things: how long you intend to keep the car, how the cabin-ride feel reads to you, and whether the GCC warranty is intact on the seller’s example.
A 2023 or 2024 Long Range with full GCC warranty at AED 123,000–128,000 is the most discounted entry into a clean-spec Model Y at this moment. The platform underneath Juniper’s new panels is identical; the drivetrain is the same; the battery is the same. The compromises are cosmetic and acoustic — you give up the new exterior look, the ambient-light interior, the quieter cabin, the softer ride, and the rear screen. None of those affect range, charging, reliability or resale beyond what the visual delta already does to depreciation.
A Juniper Long Range at AED 183,000 is the same platform with the seven changes wrapped on top. Worth the AED 50,000–60,000 if you keep the car five years or longer and care about ride feel; harder to defend if you intend to flip it inside three years, since the Juniper depreciation curve is still being written.
